website host(ing)
Web hosting is the service that provides a physical location for your website. The website resides on a computer (server) connected to the internet.

domain (name)
A domain name is the text name which links to a website. A domain name must be unique and ends with a suffix, typically .com, .co.uk, .org etc.. Internet users access your website using your domain name.

server
A computer that is permanently connected to the internet via a high speed connection that serves up web pages for display.

search engine
Internet search engines (eg Google, AltaVista) help users find web pages on a given subject. The search engines maintain databases of web sites and use programs (often referred to as "spiders" or "robots") to collect information, which is then indexed by the search engine.

search engine optimisation
Also known as SEO. The process of choosing targeted keyword phrases related to a website, and including them in the html code of website pages. This helps to ensure that a site is accessible to a search engine and improves the chances that the site will be found when a user looks for those keywords.

image optimisation
The process of perfecting the appearance of photographs, illustrations and other graphic elements for computer display. Includes techniques to ensure images appear as quickly as possible on screen whilst not compromising quality.

forms
Forms are a way of collecting information from website visitors. Visitors answer a set of given questions and submit the form which is then automatically forwarded to your email inbox.

guestbook
A guestbook is a live, viewable webpage which allows visitors to add comments.
